Abdul Chappell

Picture
Abdul Chappell is an articulate new author who puts a bold face on one of the millions of young Black men subjected to modern day slavery by virtue of the war on drugs. A former gang leader, Chappell was convicted for 33 grams of powder cocaine. A crime that warranted 33 months in jail in his home of Fort Worth, TX, Chappell was charged with a 20-year sentence in the federal penitentiary instead! He has since served 11 years of his sentencing. His debut book release, "Chronicles & Memoirs of an Original Gangsta" from his publishing house, Chappell Publishing, is a mini-manifesto which expertly breaks down and analyzes the vicious cycle of street life affecting so many youth today.

What's Next?  Another Chappell Book In Progress

Abdul D. Chappell's debut urban fiction release, "Resurrection of a Dying Breed, Birth of a Black Ghetto Messiah" is a novel destined to rock the very foundations of ghetto street life everywhere. Writing from behind bars, Chappell's vision will not only shake the foundations of urban literature but also reposition the parameters of the genre, as he transforms street lit into liberation lit.

Chronicles & Memoirs of a Gangsta

Written behind bars, "Chronicles & Memoirs of an Original Gangsta" is the account of a man who has fallen prey to the streets. Similar to Claude Brown's classic, "Manchild in the Promised Land," "Chronicles" is a coming of age saga that delves into the social, political and economic conditions behind street life. A stream of thought that takes us from boy to man, street gangsta to liberation advocate, Abdul's voice intelligently addresses the afflictions of our urban communities. Redefining and repositioning everything one may think they know about the dilemma, Chappell holds nothing back in an indictment of not only a society that glamorizes senseless materialism, but also a people who do not know themselves, their history or their true souls.

Chappell's insightful observations about gangs, race, politics, religion and spirituality serve to enlighten, educate and inform as he not only decodes the problems but also offers solutions. A concise 160 page read, "Chronicle & Memoirs Of An Original Gangsta" shoots bullets into hip hop's romanticized version of the thug prototype and reveals the lifestyle for what it is; a road riddled with misery, confusion, dishonor and death
.

A correction in the crack cocaine drugs laws will see Chappell leave prison in 2013. He has written eight books, of which "Chronicle & Memoirs On An Original Gangsta" is the first. His second release "Resurrection Of A Dying Breed, Birth Of A Black Ghetto Messiah" is a fast paced fictional account of a drug dealer turned street legend intent on uplifting the hood.

With "Chronicle & Memoirs Of An Original Gangsta," he emerges from the depths of darkness inside the penal system to shine light on an atrocity that affects every sector of society.

The Story Behind The Book

I grew up in the streets.  Although I’m not proud off all things in my past, I greatly appreciate the lessons I learned in the game.  The circumstances brought about as a result of my life in the streets are second to none.  I’ve lived several lifetimes and have witnessed endless accounts of diverse dramas as well as heartbreaking miraculous life changing events.  From urban communities all across America, to state and federal prisons throughout the country, my life has been enriched by many upfront and personal catastrophic and painful lessons and tragedies that only God could have allowed me to endure and survive.

“Resurrection of a Dying Breed”
was written as a tribute to the many lost lives of both men and women who pledged and dedicated themselves to the unwritten etiquette of loyalty, honor and respect in the game, a vanished era that disappeared as quickly as it emerged. All humans lose their way in life. The game, although an illusion, brought hope within reach to millions seemingly trapped in a continuous cycle of poverty. Low economical communities financially deserted, grasped tightly onto the mirage of lies brought about through the material gain accumulated by the game.  Vast riches came about, however the price demanded to be paid were the souls and lives of its participants as well as the millions of innocent victims trapped in its inescapable borders.

I wrote “Resurrection of a Dying Breed to” create a window into the reality of what it meant to those who only wanted a way out.  A small amount of research will reveal that I used much of my real life experiences as the backdrop for “Resurrection.”  As a former ex-gang leader who changed and established the first and only historic gang truce between the Crips and Bloods in Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas, I take the reader into a close and personal account of the betrayal, love and challenges faced while trying to right the wrongs of oneself and the streets that gave birth to my persona.

The main character, Carlos G. Freeman is an Urban Messiah who sits with the "tax collectors and sinners," (Matthew 9:11) as it was written to bring about change. Carlos knows that most of the street playas don’t want to be in the streets and he struggles with a way to get them all out.

As I write here from my cell in the federal penitentiary, I appreciate Authors Tour USA so much for the opportunity to be heard.  I hope that you all know that I could not thank you enough for the help and support.  Please note that Chappell Publishing has six authors and 14 titles due soon. Urban lit, business and finance, and cultural as well as children’s books. I hope I can get all of Chappell Publishing’s authors signed up with Authors Tour USA, as I created Chappell Publishing to be a voice for the voiceless.
